Dear reader,

Welcome to the 34th issue of the EXCELLERAT newsletter!

As we enter the summer season, we are pleased to look back on another eventful period for EXCELLERAT P2. Over the past months, we have released two new success stories showcasing innovative advances in scientific software engineering and high-fidelity aeroacoustic simulations, while continuing to engage with industry and research communities at events such as ISC High Performance 2026 and Vehicle Tech Week Europe.

We are also already looking ahead to the autumn, when a new series of EXCELLERAT training courses and community activities will provide further opportunities to exchange knowledge and strengthen collaboration across the European HPC ecosystem.

In this issue, we present our latest success stories, report on our participation at Vehicle Tech Week Europe, and share upcoming opportunities to connect with the HPC community.

2. Success story: Generative AI Meets Legacy HPC Codes

Maintaining large scientific software projects often means working with complex legacy code. In this new success story, CERFACS demonstrates how locally deployed generative AI can support the modernisation of HPC applications while ensuring complete data sovereignty.

Using the open-source CodeLSD pipeline, more than 500,000 lines of legacy Fortran code were translated into structured natural-language documentation in just 70 minutes. Together with locally hosted AI models and interactive compiler assistance, the approach enables faster code understanding, improves developer onboarding, and keeps sensitive source code entirely on-premises.

3. Success story: High-Fidelity Aeroacoustic Prediction of Chevron Nozzle Jets

Researchers at RWTH Aachen University have enhanced the performance of large-scale aeroacoustic simulations using the m-AIA framework. By improving communication patterns and introducing dynamic load balancing, the team achieved near-linear scalability on the Hawk supercomputer at HLRS.

The optimised workflow enables highly accurate noise prediction in less than one day, supporting faster design iterations for quieter aircraft and other engineering applications.

4. Blog article: EXCELLERAT Academia Lounge at Vehicle Tech Week Europe 2026

EXCELLERAT P2 returned to Vehicle Tech Week Europe in Stuttgart with its Academia Lounge, creating a space for exchange between researchers and industry. Over three days, the team engaged with more than 150 industry contacts and presented collaboration opportunities around HPC, AI, simulation, digital twins, and data-driven engineering.

The event highlighted the growing demand for stronger collaboration between research organisations and industry to accelerate innovation and technology transfer.

5. Further News & Events

Training: Advanced CFD and Turbulence Modelling targeting HPC 20–22 October 2026 | Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain: This three-day training course explores advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), turbulence modelling, and multiphysics simulations on HPC systems. Participants will gain practical experience with conjugate heat transfer, Large Eddy Simulation (LES), turbomachinery applications, GPU programming, and performance optimisation through lectures and hands-on tutorials led by experts from BSC, UKRI-STFC, and EDF.

Training: Scientific Visualization 31 August – 1 September 2026 | Stuttgart, Germany: Discover how to visualise simulation results on the desktop, in Augmented Reality, and in Virtual Environments during this two-day hands-on course at HLRS. Participants will learn to build visualisation pipelines with COVISE and Vistle, create interactive 3D visualisations, and prepare models for immersive environments. An optional exam is available for participants wishing to obtain a course certificate. More information and registration
