1. Welcome

#9_christmas-visuals_LinkedIn_EXCELLERAT
Christmas and the end of 2022 is upon us, meaning that we are closing out the third year of the EXCELLERAT project. Over the last three years, we have been very busy documenting our achievements and continuing to extend our service portfolio. Once again, this past year has brought challenging circumstances and we have managed to adapt to the pandemic situation - switching as many activities as possible into digital formats. We look forward to a fresh start in 2022, and making our last few project months a success.

This issue of our newsletter includes three new success stories, focussing mostly on collaboration with other European HPC Centres of Excellence. In addition, a new blog article outlines insights we gained in a seminar to evaluate the project's innovations together with an expert from the European Commission's Horizon Results Booster, and you can learn more about our winter all-hands meeting and further news.

I hope you enjoy reading our newsletter and stay tuned for more to come in 2022. We wish you joyful holidays and a Happy New Year!

EXCELLERAT Project Coordinator

2. a) Success story: Improving air pollution modelling

3D snapshot
HiDALGO developed the Urban Air Pollution Pilot (UAP) and asked the EXCELLERAT team for support during the pilot’s application improvement phase. The primary aim of the collaboration was to improve UAP’s performance on HPC systems, by refining its use of OpenFOAM in its CFD module for pollution dispersion simulation. This included three components: On the first level, the team aimed to improve the mesh quality with snappyHexMesh. The second part of the collaboration dealt with the optimisation of the steady state simulation using simpleFoam and then the third, improving transient simulation with pimpleFoam. Learn more about this collaboration in a new success story.

2. b) Success story: Bunsen flame simulation now runs two times faster

POP Centre of Excellence assessed the performance of EXCELLERAT's use case solved with Alya that simulates a Bunsen flame. The POP assessment unveiled that the main factor limiting scalability for this use case is the load imbalance. The load imbalance issue is inherent to the problem that is being solved, because the chemical reactions only happen and are thus computed in a small section of the domain. Moreover, where the chemical will happen cannot be computed beforehand, therefore the domain partition cannot be adjusted to minimise the imbalance. One of the suggestions included in the performance assessment is the use of the DLB (Dynamic Load Balancing) library to address the load imbalance issue, the potential of this approach has been shown in a POP proof-of-concept. Read more about this collaboration in a success story.

2. c) Success story: Enabling sustainable GPU acceleration on a Fortran legacy code

succsess_story_AVBP
AVBP is a cutting-edge software when it comes to distributed memory CPUs (efficiently scaling up to 200.000 of cores). However, many of the most powerful HPC systems heavily rely on GPU accelerators, and this trend will likely accelerate with the upcoming Exascale systems. Extending AVBP to support GPU architectures in addition to the current CPU implementation seems mandatory to efficiently use computing resources in the Exascale era. Learn how this could be achieved in a success story by our partner Cerfacs.

3. Blog article: EXCELLERAT Exploitation Strategy Seminar with Horizon Results Booster for Vistle, Alya and Uqit

In collaboration with experts from Horizon Results Booster (HRB), EXCELLERAT has completed its first internal Exploitation Strategy Seminar for three selected Key Exploitable Results (KERs): Vistle, Alya and UQit on October 29th 2021. Learn more in a recent blog article by our partner Teratec.

4. Further news & events

Fourth digital all-hands meeting
Our winter project meeting took place from 30 November to 1 December 2021. For the fourth time in a row, it was hosted as a digital event, given the continuing pandemic situation. Representatives from all partners, a total of about 30 participants on each day, presented the EXCELLERAT project tasks’ good progress, some minor challenges they faced in 2021, as well as the requirements for the project’s extension and great final results. Learn more in our blog article.

E-flyers on EXCELLERAT services available
If you want to learn more about what EXCELLERAT offers for the aerospace sector, or which solution we have for simulation, data analytics and management, co-design, and visualisation, please check out our dedicated e-flyers, available for download on our website.

HPC Asia 2022 Workshop (12-14 January 2022)
Our partners from KTH and Fraunhofer SCAI will give a talk at a workshop titled "Multi-scale, Multi-physics and Coupled Problems on highly parallel systems (MMCP)" at HPC Asia in January 2022. Their talk will deal with a framework for in-situ estimation of time-averaging uncertainties. Learn more and don't miss it.

ML4SIM Data analytics for engineering data using machine learning (20-21 January 2022)
As part of the EXCELLERAT training program, Fraunhofer SCAI in cooperation with HLRS offer a two-day workshop on data analytics for simulation data using machine learning. Register by 16 January 2022.
