1. Welcome

We are now half way through the first project period of EXCELLERAT, the Centre of Excellence for high-performance computing applications for engineering. Along the way we have achieved our first milestones, moving our core codes from Petascale-readiness to Exascale performance. We also now have a first set of services for the community, accompanied by the newly launched EXCELLERAT Service Portal. Together with our partners, we are producing the first Success Stories related to our core codes. And – as external drivers and consultants – we have established the EXCELLERAT interest groups, which I am pleased to say are growing steadily as new partners join.

Our progress is reflected in this issue: we will show you our first success story with Alya, one of our core codes. You can also read the second part of our Nek5000 use case, which we introduced in the previous issue, and check out our upcoming events, as well as further news about the Centre of Excellence. I hope you enjoy reading our newsletter and stay tuned for more information to come within the next months!

EXCELLERAT Project Coordinator

2. Success story: Full Airplane Simulations on Heterogeneous Architectures

Many of the future Exascale systems will be heterogeneous and include accelerators such as GPUs. With the explosion of parallelism, we also expect the performance of the various computing devices to be more variable and, therefore, the performance of the system components to be less certain. Leading-edge engineering simulation codes need to be malleable enough to adapt to the new environment. For Alya, EXCELLERAT’s reference code that is used for modelling complex systems, like airplane simulations, dynamic load balance mechanics are required to adjust the workload distribution to the measured performance of each component of the system.
Read the success story.

3. Use Case: Nek5000

In our previous issue we presented the first part of the NEK5000 use case. Read the second part now and find out about Nek5000’s Exascale readiness, particularly with respect to accelerators.

5. News

  • Service Portal launched: EXCELLERAT's mission is to provide support and consultancy services at different levels to cover the complete engineering lifecycle. Our new Service Portal offers training, consultancy, a repository, HPC resources, and more. For further information, read this EXCELLERAT blog article.
  • Podcast #3 | How to improve Autonomous Vehicles with HPC simulations. Listen to the latest episode of the HPC podcast powered by EXCELLERAT. In this interview, Wim Slagter, Director for High Performance Computing and Cloud Alliances at Ansys, explains how Exascale simulations can support the development of Autonomous Vehicles.
  • Focus CoE newsletter: To find out more about EXCELLERAT and the other European Centres of Excellence for HPC applications, read the latest issue of Focus CoE's newsletter.
